For extremely effective solids waste such as sand clay ,star , gras removal at flow rates up to 5 gallons per minute per square foot (GPM/ft2) the Conventional Downflow media filter offers an economical solution. Media beds can be sand, sand/anthracite, garnet/anthracite or anthracite depending on the service application. Typical installations use vertical vessels with header lateral distributors or a strainer plate design. Horizontal units are also offered for larger flow rates for economy in cost and space. Most installations require the use of air scour for cleaning the media when applications have difficult solids to remove. This design is well suited for water treatment applications such as removal of turbidity, softening processes precipitates, oxidized iron and manganese, and following a clarifier. This filter can be constructed of alloy materials for use in mining and corrosive applications such as copper electrolyte in solvent extraction/electrowinning circuits.
